The Japan Tattoo Institute in Niche Business Directory
The Japan Tattoo Institute is the first organization devoted to preserving and encouraging the traditional Japanese art of hand-tattooing known as tebori. Established in 1981 by Keibunsha , along with tattoo artist Kuronuma Tamotsu Horiyoshi II, Dr. Katsunari Fukushi and the author Akimitsu Takagi, the Tattoo Institute publishes books, photobooks, videos, CD-ROMs of Japans most recognized tattoo artists both traditional and contemporary. The institute is currently compiling the Japanese Tattoo Encyclopedia. Traditional Japanese tattoos are intricate pageants of rich design. An art that has matured into perfection, Japanese tattooing originated from the woodblock prints of the late Edo period (1804-1868). The Japanese technique is called tebori (to carve by hand) --using bundled needles at the end of bamboo rod to insert charcoal ink into the skin. Living skin is the canvass of this aesthetic world on which the technique of tebori matured into the chiaroscuro, coloring and shading of the Japanese tattoo we know today.
